Fat soluble Vitamin A is an important antioxidant and is needed to maintain a healthy immune system, skin and mucous membranes. Deficiency symptoms include dry hair, skin and eyes, poor growth and night blindness. Excessive intake (over 100,000 I.U. daily) over a long period of time may cause a toxic buildup of the vitamin.

Natural Beta-carotene can be converted within the body to vitamin A as needed, so no build-up occurs; however, some people, especially those with diabetes or hypothyroidism, are not able to efficiently convert beta-carotene to vitamin A.
